Kettlebells – bringing the fun back to training!

About Joe Mancaruso

“In 2006 I started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 48 years old. I was the oldest guy on the mat, typically training with guys in their 20’s.  I quickly realized that all of my years of weight training meant very little on the mat because I had not developed functional strength. Many of the guys had wrestled at Boise State or up through High School and wrestlers have crazy strength.

Not only that but in 1986 I was diagnosed with cancer and after a couple of surgeries and 8 rounds of chemotherapy, which left me with permanent nerve damage and no feeling in both arms, hands, legs and feet.

I started looking for ways to improve my core and grip strength and came across an article on Russian Kettlebells and decided to order a couple. In 2007, I recieved my Fitness Trainer Certification from the World Kettlebell Club and started to utilize them with my boot camp and personal training clients.

Kettlebells have become my main excercise tool and rarely use anything else in my training regimine.  In May 2012 I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer (I have never smoked). The doctors gave me 9-12 months to live with continued chemotherapy to manage pain. In 2012 I had 4 surgeries, a collapsed lung, 3 and 3 rounds of chemo.

During the whole process I kept training with my kettlebells and had to put Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on the back burner for a year. In August 2013 I quit the chemotherapy and started self treatment. In February 2014 I started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu again and feel great and plan on Competing in the 2014 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Worlds.”
